The State of West Virginia

The people in the mountainous country of West Virginia did not have slaves. The economy was small farms and mines. The economy of this region was much more linked to the industry based economy of the north.

Socially and culturally the people of West Virginia were much more alined with the north, than with the planters of the south. When Richmond and Virginia seceded from the Union the people of West Virginia seceded from Richmond and Virginia. West Virginia would be admitted as a new state to the Union in 1863.
