The answer varies, yet a paper by the University of Hawaii believes that the single largest source of air pollution may be the burning of fossil fuels.

These fuels indirectly lead to other causes such as acid rain, smog and the most evident factor is the increase of greenhouse gases.

However, the trick is fossil fuels are used widely in our lives, from industrial to fueling our automobiles. Hence, it is difficult to find a sustainable replacement for it and at the same time, reducing its' impact on the environment.
