Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant attempted to two major assaults (May 19 and 22, 1863) against the Confederate fortifications at Vicksburg on May 19 and May 22. Both assaults were repulsed with heavy casualties on the Union side.

After this Gen Grant decided to besiege the city beginning on May 25.

The Confederate forces held out for more than forty days. However, on July 4th with no reinforcements and supplies nearly depleted, the garrison finally surrendered.
