Lee became the main general of the Confederate Army, in the East. Robert E. Lee was the leader of the Army of Northern Virginia. Since he was from Virginia Lee turned down the offer he Union Army.

Lee was not the leading general in the first battle of the Civil War, The first battle of Bull Run. Robert E. Lee took over the Army of Northern Virginia midway in the Pennisula campaign against the Union Commander of George McClean. .

There were other Confederate Generals particularly in the West, but in the East the leading General was Robert E. Lee.
