Freedom of speech is fundamental to individual freedom.

Explanation:

  1. Freedom of speech leads to freedom of thought. If people are not allowed to freely express their opinions then thought control results.
When only speech that the government or society approves of is allowed people are not free to think, A form of group think or brain washing results. The present shutting down of "offensive " speech on college campuses is sparingly approaching the loss of freedom of speech.

  2. Freedom of speech is essential to democracy. Democracy depends on the exchange of ideas. The debate between conflicting ideas is part and partial of democracy. Sometimes the best ideas are a compromise found by debate between different viewpoints.

If people are not free to express their thoughts they are not truly free.
