Dorothea Dix is famous for her role in organizing the hospitals for Union Army during the Civil War.


Dorothea Dix was put in charge of all of the Union Hospitals during the Civil War. She was put in charge one week after the war began.
At the time she was put in charge no one realized the immensity of the job she had been given.

Dorothea Dix was also responsible for recruiting, training and supervising the vast number of nurses needed to staff the hospitals.
Clara Burton and some of the nurses became more famous than Ms Dix who worked behind the sense as the administrator.

After the war Dorothea Dix was also instrumental in setting up care for the mentally ill.
