The maximum number of electrons which an energy level can hold is equal to `2n^2` where `n` is the principal quantum number.

If `n=1` the maximum number of electrons = `2xx1^2=2`

So there are a maximum of 2 electrons in the `n=1` energy level.

If `n=2` the maximum number of electrons = `2xx2^2=8` electrons

If `n=3` the maximum number of electrons =`2xx3^2=18` electrons.

And so on.
