Why is the respiration reaction exothermic?

Exothermic reaction is when heat is being released from a system. Since when we take in oxygen it binds with haemoglobin releasing large amount of energy and thus, alongside with heat: C6H12O6 + O2= CO2+ H2O+ 2900 kj/ mol.
