Transformation which was discovered by Fredrick Griffith in Streptococcus pneumonia. Transformation is uptake of naked DNA fragments from the surrounding environment and the expression of that genetic information in the recipient cell that is , the recipient cell has now acquired a characterstic that it previously lacked.

eg. If the foreign DNA segment codes for antibiotic resistance and now the recipient cell has taken that fragment , naturally the recipient cell will also show antibiotic resistance trait.
