Synapse is the junction between two nerve cells. There are
1. presynaptic axonic terminal,
2. synaptic cleft and
3. postsynaptic dendritic membrane

in a synapse.

Explanation:

Synapse is a structural entity in nervous system where axon terminal of one neuron and dendritic terminal(s) of other neuron remain in close association but these terminals remain physically separated by a small microscopic gap called synaptic cleft.

When a nerve impulse reaches presynaptic axonic end, neurotransmitter substances are released from axonic terminal. Such neurohumor substances diffuse through synaptic cleft and are picked up by receptors present on membrane of dendritic terminal. This leads to formation of action potential in postsynaptic neuron.
