Scientists used to believe that the earth was the center of the solar system. Copernicus published a book in 1543 about the "heliocentric" view. Nobody wanted to give up Ptolemy's "geocentric" view until Copernicus was proved right. Kepler was the one who made detailed observations about planets' orbits and described them mathematically so that no doubt was left that the planets actually revolved around the sun.
