Why do some singular proper nouns require "the" while others do not? For example, it is correct to say just "Stonehenge" but it is also correct to say "The Great Wall of China"?

If the name of a place contains of we use the definite article before it.
Examples:
the Bank of England, the Houses of Parliament,
the Great Wall of China
