The final displacement of the ball (from its original position) is #1.25 " m"#. If we choose the vertical upward direction as a positive axis, we could even call it #-1.25 " m"#

Explanation:

The distances travelled by the ball as it bounces, up and then down, are in displacement terms off opposite sign and cancel out. Displacement is like position. In fact it is often represented in the maths by the position vector #mathbf r#.
