Why should you never add potassium to hydrochloric acid?

Because it is TOO reactive a metal.........and in fact you don't even add it to water.........

This would occur with a lot of spits and sparks even if water were used instead of hydrogen chloride...............Potassium is often used as a drying agent in stills..........and when the still is eventually cleaned, the potassium residues have to be carefully destroyed.
