To create a covalent bond, two atoms SHARE electrons as opposed to transferring. Atoms share electrons to attain the electron configuration of a noble gas. Basically, atoms will do anything to have full electron orbitals, giving them the most stability possible.

There are two main types of covalent bonds: polar and nonpolar. A polar covalent bond is formed by unequal electron sharing, while a nonpolar covalent bond is formed by equal electron sharing.
