The process of transfer of an alkyl group from one molecule to the another is termed as alkylation.

The alkyl group is transferred in the form of an intermediate such as an alkyl carbocation, a free radical, a carbanion or a carbene.

Thus, alkylation of a DNA in anhydrous conditions would alter certain number of atoms of Carbon, hydrogen or any other element present in the DNA.

Therefore in medical science, alkylation of DNA is used in chemotherapy to damage the DNA of carcinogenic or cancer cells.
