The farther away, the longer ago

Explanation:

If we look at a star that is e.g. 10 lightyears away, this means that light has traveled 10 years to reach us. In other words, we see the star as it was 10 years ago.

Same goes for the universe. Light from the edges of the known universe has taken 14 billion years to reach us, so what we see is the situation as it was then, 14 billion years ago.

Note:
The same goes for closer objects. If the sun were to go out right now, we would only notice after about 8 minutes....
