Why does a kilogram of lead occupy a much smaller volume than a kilogram of water?

And thus both express a characteristic density, i.e. mass per unit volume. Now water has unit density, one gram per millilitre. I do not know the density of lead offhand but I do know it will be much more dense than water (do not fishermen use lead sinkers?).
