It reduces the gain in KE you get for a set fall in PE and vice versa.


Forces are what we notice when there is a transfer of energy. Friction is the force that converts KE into heat due to the microscopic rubbing/interaction of two surfaces when one is in motion relative to the other. Friction always opposes motion and normally degrades ‘useful’ into ‘wasted’ energy.
