Tea

Explanation:

The British were taken by tea. It became a very popular drink in England.

The Chinese did not want to trade with the British. So the British had to create a need for something that would cause the Chinese to want to trade with them so the British could get the Chinese tea the British wanted.

The British exported opium from their colonies in Indian, Pakistan and Afaganistan to China. The British encouraged opium use and addiction to create a need for a product that the Chinese would be willing to trade Chinese tea for.

The ploy worked. Many people in China became addicted to opium forcing the Chinese to trade with English. The British got their tea and the Chinese got an addiction problem.
