Talking about atoms, not molecules...


Paramagnetic materials are attracted by an externally applied magnetic field and form internal, induced magnetic fields in the direction of the applied magnetic field. <--extract from this page

They have at least one unpaired electron whereas diamagnetic have none as they only have paired electrons.

(Atom of) Nitrogen (N) [not #N_2#]configuration:

#1s^2 2s^2 2p^3# ...there are 3 unpaired electrons in the 2p orbital.

Phosphorus (P) is diamagnetic.
