# How are acids named?

Jun 1, 2018

Jack, Harry, Geoff, Nancy....

#### Explanation:

Most of us simply commit the names of the common acids to memory...and do not rely on oxidation number systems...

e,g,...

$H C l$ $\text{...hydrochloric acid;}$ $C l \left(- I\right)$...its salts are $\text{chlorides..}$

$H O C l$ $\text{...hypochlorous acid;}$ $C l \left(+ I\right)$...its salts are $\text{hypochlorites..}$ (And what we do call such solutions when we use them in the household?)

$H O C l O$ $\text{...chlorous acid;}$ $C l \left(+ I I I\right)$..its salts are $\text{chlorites..}$

$H O C l {O}_{2}$ $\text{...chloric acid;}$ $C l \left(+ V\right)$..its salts are $\text{chlorates..}$

$H C l {O}_{4}$ $\text{...perchloric acid;}$ $C l \left(+ V I I\right)$..its salts are $\text{perchlorates..}$

Anyway, in whatever course you are in, you will soon learn the names of the acids you use...
