How are covalent bonds named?

Jan 14, 2015

Covalent bonds are named based on their nature.

Covalency occurs when 2 or more atoms share their electrons so that they get they get their octet of electrons.

Now

Something like this

$M g 0$ will be called magnesium oxide

$C {O}_{2}$ will be called carbon dioxide

${H}_{2} {O}_{2}$ This is what we call hydrogen peroxide(PS DO NOT CONFUSE WITH REGULAR OXIDES AS IT HAS TO HAVE ${O}^{-} {2}_{2} I O N$

okay and compounds with 3 carbon atoms are called trioxides..

${P}_{2} {0}_{5}$ this phosphorus pentoxide.

Thats all for the basics.
