# How do you graph y=3absx?

Jul 10, 2017

Graph:

$y = 3 \left\mid x \right\mid$

Since $\left\mid a \right\mid = \pm a$, there are two equations; one in which $x$ is positive, and one in which $x$ is negative.

Positive X

$y = 3 x$

Determine two points.

$x = 0 ,$$y = 0$

$x = 2 ,$$y = 6$

Points: $\left(0 , 0\right)$ and $\left(2 , 6\right)$

Plot the points and draw a straight line through them.

Negative X

$y = - 3 x$

Determine two points.

$x = 0 ,$$y = 0$

$x = - 2 ,$$y = 6$

Points: $\left(0 , 0\right)$ and $\left(- 2 , 6\right)$

Plot the points and draw a straight line through them.
