# How do you solve 13-8v=5v+2 if it has variables on both sides?

We call that the balance method, because you are allowed to do the same at both sides of the $=$ sign, just like you may do with the scales of a balance.
$13 - 8 v = 5 v + 2$ now add $8 v$ on both sides
$13 - 8 v + 8 v = 5 v + 2 + 8 v \to$ the $8 v$'s left cancel out
$13 = 13 v + 2$ now subtract $2$ from both sides:
$13 - 2 = 13 v + 2 - 2 \to 11 = 13 v \to$
$13 v = 11$ divide both sides by $13$ $\to v = 11 / 13$
