How does cystic fibrosis interfere with gas exchange in the lungs?

In Cystic Fibrosis , there is accumulation of mucus in the lungs. It causes the production of abnormally thick mucus, leading to the blockage of the pancreatic ducts, intestines, and bronchi and often resulting in respiratory infection.
If the alveoli get surrounded by thick mucus , the surface area for the gaseous exchange reduces and it causes difficulty in breathing.
