# How to convert a carboxylic acid to an alcohol?

A carboxylic acid contains carboxylic group $- C O O H$.

Its formula may be written as $R C O O H$

Alcohol is produced from it by REDUCTION , Then its $- C O O H$group turns into $- C {H}_{2} O H$ group( a primary alcoholic group.)

And the reaction is presented in the form of equation as

$R C O O H + \left[4 H\right] \to R C {H}_{2} O H + {H}_{2} O$

The Reagent of this REDUCTION process may be

$\text{Lithium tetrahydridoaluminate/Dry ether } \to L i A l {H}_{4}$
