# What does shorthand notation mean?

Apr 26, 2017

It's when you get lazy and decide to write abbreviations for what you're actually meaning.

Some examples:

• Aluminum $\to$ $\text{Al}$
• "with respect to" $\to$ $\text{w.r.t.}$
• Journal of Chemical Physics $\to$ $\text{J. Chem. Phys.}$
• Chromium(III) cation $\to$ ${\text{Cr}}^{3 +}$, or "Cr"("III")

You could also mean noble gas shorthand electron configurations:

$\stackrel{N e}{\overbrace{\textcolor{red}{1 {s}^{2} 2 {s}^{2} 2 {p}^{6}}}} 3 {s}^{2} = \textcolor{red}{\left[N e\right]} 3 {s}^{2}$
(magnesium configuration)

$\stackrel{A r}{\overbrace{\textcolor{red}{1 {s}^{2} 2 {s}^{2} 2 {p}^{6} 3 {s}^{2} 3 {p}^{6}}}} 4 {s}^{1} 3 {d}^{10} = \textcolor{red}{\left[A r\right]} 4 {s}^{1} 3 {d}^{10}$
(copper configuration)

etc.
