# What is the degree of 9xy^3z^6? (second problem) 3x^3 - 2x^2y^2 + y^2?

May 21, 2015

The degree of a monomial is how many variables are in it. In $9 x {y}^{3} {z}^{6}$, there are actually 10. This is actually:

$9 \times x \times y \times y \times y \times z \times z \times z \times z \times z \times z$

So, there are 10 variables, even though some are repeated.

[Second Problem]

I'm not sure what to do with this one. It's just an expression. I can't simplify it. I may be able to factor it. Can you let me know in the comments what to do with this? Without it, this is just a degree 4 polynomial.
