Discriminant $\to {b}^{2} - 4 a c$

$a = 1$
$b = 2$
$c = 8$

${b}^{2} - 4 a c \to {\left(2\right)}^{2} - 4 \left(1\right) \left(8\right)$

$4 - 32 = - 28$

Because the Discriminant is less than 0 we know that we have 2 complex roots.
