And so we get a $S \left(V I +\right)$ compound, whose formation typically requires catalysis, i.e.
$S {O}_{2} \left(g\right) + C {l}_{2} \left(g\right) \stackrel{\text{activated carbon}}{\rightarrow} S {O}_{2} C {l}_{2} \left(l\right)$
