Explanation:

A short exchange between soldiers of the 7th Calvary and a band of Lakota (including families) led to the deaths of up to 300 Lakota and 25 Soldiers. There were 20 Medals of Honor awarded. Some of the soldiers were killed by friendly fire.

The Calvary were escorting the Lakota when they tried to disarm them. A scuffle led to an exchange of shots which escalated to artillery fire.

Tensions were initially created by arise of the Ghost Dance religion.
