Do bases react with active metals to produce hydrogen?

Yes it does happen, if you have a sufficiently active metal with an amphoteric oxide or hydroxide.
Stefan mentions aluminum as one example. Zinc is another. Alkali and alkaline earth metals, however, don't react that way because their oxides are not amphoteric.
