I understand the argument for it, but the subscript ‘total’, ‘net’ etc. are very common in Physics and all of them are locked to produce algebraic symbols. Rather irritating. Is there a solution?

Use quote marks.

Assuming that this is what you're referring to, you can write text in between hashtags by using quote marks.

You know that you ca write something like this

without hashtags

total

with hashtags

#total#

If you add quote marks, you can get

without hashtags

"total"

with hashtags

#"total"#

And there you have it, problem solved! :D

without hashtags

F_"total" != F_"net"

with hashtags

#F_"total" != F_"net"#
