How does earth's distance from the sun affect the climate?

I feel it should be a fairly simple and obvious answer that temperature is affected due to the heat provided by the light of the sun. The closer the sun is the greater will be the intensity of the heat radiation, therefore, causing the temperature to rise and thus changing the climate over time.
