# I understand the argument for it, but the subscript ‘total’, ‘net’ etc. are very common in Physics and all of them are locked to produce algebraic symbols. Rather irritating. Is there a solution?

Use quote marks.

#### Explanation:

Assuming that this is what you're referring to, you can write text in between hashtags by using quote marks.

You know that you ca write something like this

• without hashtags

total

• with hashtags

$\to t a l$

If you add quote marks, you can get

• without hashtags

"total"

• with hashtags

$\text{total}$

And there you have it, problem solved! :D

• without hashtags

F_"total" != F_"net"

• with hashtags

${F}_{\text{total" != F_"net}}$
