Key Questions

  • Descriptive statistics and Inferential statistics are the two major fields of statistics.

    1. Descriptive statistics are methods concerned with the collection, presentation, analysis and interpretation of data without drawing any inferences or prediction about a larger set of data basing on the smaller set. It just focus on the describing that sample data. Conclusions are applied on data on-hand.

    2. On the otherhand, Inferential statistics are methods concerned with the analysis and interpretation of data and inferences-making for a larger set based on the sampled data. It focuses in making predictions, and estimation of unknown parameters. These are commonly used in estimating unknown quantities.

  • You can't take the whole population everytime to measure whatever yu need (avg., mode, etc.); the population might be vast.

  • There are two general types of data.

Quantitative data is information about quantities; that is, information that can be measured and written down with numbers.

    For example:
Weight in pounds, time in seconds, number of questions correct on a quiz, height, shoe size, and the length of your fingernails. etc

Categorical data/ Qualitative data is information about qualities; information that can't actually be measured.

    For example:
Gender, the softness of your skin, the grace with which you run, and the color of your eyes, model of car, Yes or No, Pass or Fail etc
