Acetic anhydride is used for a wide variety of applications where formation of esters is required, for example the manufacture of the common painkiller aspirin (acetyl salicylic acid), and the polymer cellulose acetate which is used in many applications such as consumer items, synthetic fabrics etc.
Maleic anhydride is used widely in the manufacture of synthetic resins such as unsaturated polyester resins for use in fibre reinforced plastics.
