They aren't, at least by most scientists.

Explanation:

Although a fair percentage of the public believes genetically modified foods are unsafe, there is almost universal agreement throughout the scientific community that GMOs are safe, and their advantages completely outweigh their disadvantages.

Altering the genetic makeup of foods doe not suddenly make them toxic, and genetic modification has even been found to occur in nature.
