In a nutshell, a Hero is a trusted member of the community in charge with welcoming newcomers to the site.
The responsibilities of a Socratic Hero include interacting with newcomers and making sure that they become familiar with the Socratic way, so to speak.
Heroes encourage great teaching and help newcomers channel their inner teachers.
In order to become a Hero, you must show dedication and commitment to the Socratic mission. Try to be a positive force on the site -- write great answers and help others write great answers.
Finally, keep in mind that it takes time to become a Hero, so don't get discouraged if you don't make it soon. Also, our ultimate goal here is to help make Socratic one of the best places to learn on the internet, something that we can all do regardless if we have special responsibilities on the site or not :)
