Some characteristic traits of monocots are :
- leaves exhibit parallel veination
- the number of petals, stamens, or other floral parts are in multiples of three (3,6,9)
- vascular bundles are scattered through out of he stem
- they have an adventitious root system
- monocots are mostly herbaeceous
The monocots include about 60,000 species. In agriculture the majority of the biomass produced comes from monocots. These include major grains, forage grasses, sugar cane and bamboo.
